Methodology, fields and limitations
Scope and deduplication
The four open Corporations Canada CSV files. One record per unique corporation number (id). Duplicate identifiers fail import. An alternate legal name is not another corporation.
Fields and formulas
Total = COUNT(*) of corporations. Grouping fields: province, city, status, status_detail, act and annual_year. Percentage = group count ÷ all records in the selection × 100. Inactive details use Inactive + Dissolved as denominator. Every table retains missing values and, for cities, the remainder beyond the top 20.
Registered office and cities
Province describes the registered office, not incorporating jurisdiction. NL is normalized to NF. Unknown codes remain separate. Cities use Unicode NFC, whitespace and case normalization; accents and punctuation are retained. No metropolitan aggregation or matching of similar names.
Statuses and Acts
Active = Active. Inactive and dissolved = Inactive + Dissolved. Other statuses and blanks stay distinct. Acts come from the act field and do not describe industries. Status details are reproduced or translated without inferring bankruptcy.
Annual filings and history
annual_year is the year of last filing. Blank values are missing; malformed years, years before 1900 and years later than the file reference year are invalid. No historical series is shown: comparable snapshots or permitted official transaction data would be needed. anniversary is never used as an incorporation date.
Refresh and retention
The existing Windows task checks the federal catalogue daily at 6:10 a.m. Toronto time when the workstation is on and the user is signed in. Licence programs are checked weekly. Aggregates are rebuilt and reconciled before atomic publication to the site database. On failure, the previous valid snapshot is retained. An unchanged check does not alter publication or import dates.
Dates and provenance
Aggregates calculated . Exact timestamps, per-file dates, source generation and metric definitions are included in the JSON.
Licence and attribution
Corporations Canada : Open data · Open Government Licence – Canada. Aggregation: Entity Search. Neither Entity Search nor its calculations are endorsed by government. The six programs retain their own licences and units; no cross-source deduplication is claimed. Downloads contain no individual names or addresses.
